I’ve added a new section to the blog: the story behind Death Gate, an old school graphic adventure game based on the classic book series by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman.
For a split second, Good Old Games released Death Gate on their site until they realized that they didn’t have the book license–but for that moment, it was great to see how fans responded with their memories of their experiences with the game. It spurred me to write up this post. They even did a walkthrough I found fascinating.
There’s a fair amount of new material there, including my perspective on designing and driving the effort to build the game, plus all my original notes (never before released).
While I’m very proud of the final game, I also look back with some sadness too, because I lost a dear friend just after it was released: a skilled artist who found his calling in his work for Death Gate, which remains as a testament to his talent.
Please check out the post and leave feedback to let me know what you think, and maybe suggest the next game I should write up.
