When I launched this site, I included a number of behind-the-scenes articles about games I’d shipped in my career as a designer. However, quite a few I left blank. I intended one day to return and write them up as well. Unfortunately for fans, writing my fantasy books took priority.
That said, I put a placeholder page for a few of those games. One in particular was Angry Birds: Space Assault. Given that it was only ever a concept and not a shipped game, it went on the back burner. However, I did add in the concept animation that I used to present the idea to Rovio, just so it would be handy when I returned.
I don’t know how, but some tenacious Angry Birds fan not only found that concept video, but distributed the link into the wild. For years, one of the most consistent sources of traffic has been AB fans tracking down the video here to my page.
I know what die-hard fans are like. Hell, I designed a Star Trek game. But there was one fan who would not let this go. He desperately wanted to see more. He emailed me for months, and just recently he resurfaced to start emailing me every day to prod me to release whatever I had!
Well, I don’t want to encourage this kind of behavior, but I had been looking for an excuse to release all the info about Angry Birds: Space Assault. I had a lot of material, and enough time has passed that I think I’m ready to do so.
I usually tell people that my articles are about how my games are disasters until they aren’t and then we ship something quite cool. Unfortunately, this article is just about a disaster. It was fun in spirit, but was never allowed to fly,
So if you’re a fan or just want to know about another game I designed–but didn’t get to ship this time–check out the article here.
