When I add a new book to the series, I love to have the bookmarks I hand out at signings include the new cover art, so with the imminent addition of the Wrath of Order to the Chronicles, it made sense to update the bookmark design. Note that, because of the new title, the size increased from 2″x6″ to 2″x8″. Is it weird that I’m kind of excited about that?
This was a chance to update the bookmark’s functionality, too. While my bookmark always directed people to my website, I wanted to add something else to the back.
I enjoy having an important part of the Chronicles to give away for free, both to people who purchase the books AND to people just curious about them, so I wrote the Dice of Chaos (book 1/2) which reveals the story behind Lorre’s incredible dice. It’s a great way to break the ice and get into the series.
At every in-person sale, I’ve had to point the reader to a sign that asks them to scan a QR code to download the short story (which also gets them onto my mailing list). It worked, but was clumsy.
Now, by including that information on the bookmark, they don’t have to take a picture to walk away with that QR code. Even if they didn’t realize they had it, people can discover it on the bookmark later. While I’m sure that having people download the book in the moment helps, I wonder if more will grab it later with the bookmark in hand.
