There are quite a few readers who wait for the audiobook in order to enjoy my latest releases. I don’t blame them. You can drive, work out, or do whatever AND listen to the latest book (as well as hear all my crazy character voices, something you don’t get from the text). My daughter saves my audiobooks for her commute to and from LA. Others lay back, close their eyes, and watch the movie play in their heads. Whatever reason you have, I’m glad to say audiobook fans can snag it now.
This audiobook release represents the end of a long journey that started when I began writing Wrath. I view it as a necessary part of the book’s creation. Even so, I don’t look forward to this step. There is a famous quote that says, “I hate writing. I love having written.” While I kind of agree overall, I definitely feel that way about creating the audiobook.
I don’t mind the recording part. For me, that’s the most fun. I’m a ham with a drama background. I get to act my novel out. I get to re-experience all the fun and excitement of the story. And, most importantly, this allows me to do a critical read-through of the book BEFORE I release the text version. I discover enough little errors that even my editor misses that this has become part of my overall writing process.
But my voice acting and recording background have turned me into a perfectionist. When I record, I do multiple takes for almost EVERY LINE (especially dialog), which means the editing process takes months. Can you imagine separating and stitching together every sentence of an entire novel?
That said, “I love having written.” The minute I finish splicing the last line, retaking the last mistake, adding the last special effect, I’ve fallen back in love with it. The end result sounds perfect (or at least, as perfect as I can make it).
What’s more, there was something that made this particular audiobook even more special: the Foreword, graciously written AND read aloud by legendary game designer Josh Mandel. I was blown away when he gave me the text, and even more so when he recorded himself reading it for the audiobook.
So, if this is the way you like to experience my books, I’m so happy that this version is now available. I’m pretty sure you’ll enjoy it. And I hope you forgive me having to voice so many female characters. ‘Writer’ me definitely likes abusing ‘voice-actor’ me.
